Eager to remove all lawn grass from their property, the Steffens wanted to significantly increase their planting areas and expand their rare palm collection. Located on the Coral Gables Waterway, the project’s biggest challenge was to maintain views of the water while cultivating a lush garden. The final planting plan uses minimalist swathes of ornamental grasses to create a canvas for signature palms to be added to over time. Larger plants are layered along the edges of the property and feature many native pollinator attracting plants. An edible garden component is also worked into the design. All sod is replaced with native stone gravel.
